The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed accusations that its officers attempted to break into the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.
In a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, the police explained that officers were sent to the RSIEC facility after receiving reports of a likely attack.
The command stressed that the purpose of the deployment was to safeguard the premises, not to tamper with electoral materials.
This clarification follows claims made by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who accused the police of trying to seize sensitive election materials intended for the upcoming local government elections.
The police, however, noted that officers initially stationed at the RSIEC office by the Rivers State Government House were withdrawn after a Federal High Court ruling on September 30, 2024, prohibited police involvement in the elections.
“Acting on credible intelligence about a planned arson attack by hoodlums, our personnel were deployed to secure the RSIEC office,” the statement read.
The Rivers State Police Command reassured of its commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state, urging residents to be law-abiding.
