The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has disclosed that 20.30 billion litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly called petrol, were reportedly imported into the country in 2023.
NBS disclosed this in its Petroleum Products Distribution Statistics for 2023, released on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to the report, the 2023 figure represents a 13.77 per cent drop when compared to the 23.54 billion litres imported in 2022.
In addition, the report stated that 4.94 billion litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), popularly referred to as diesel, were imported into the country in 2023, reflecting a significant 23.66 per cent increase from the 4.00 billion litres recorded in 2022.
The NBS report further indicated that the volume of PMS trucked out to various parts of the country in 2023 stood at 20.22 billion litres. This marks a 16.96 per cent decline compared to the 24.35 billion litres distributed in 2022.
On local production, the report highlighted that 69.71 million litres of Household Kerosene (HHK) were produced in 2023, a substantial 56.02 per cent rise from the 44.68 million litres produced in 2022.
For diesel, the report disclosed that 109.39 million litres were produced locally in 2023, representing a modest 6.76 per cent increase from the 102.47 million litres recorded in 2022.
