The organisers of the Miss Malawi pageant have selected 21-year-old Ireen Navicha to represent Malawi at the Miss World competition, citing her age and community initiatives as some of the factors that influenced the decision.
Speaking to the media, one of the officials of Miss Malawi, Godfrey Kambewa, said the decision was made after carefully assessing the requirements and trends of the Miss World competition.
Kambewa said the organisers had observed that the international competition has, over the years, favoured young contestants, particularly those aged between 18 and 25.
He said Navicha, who is 21 years old, therefore has a strong chance of performing well at the competition.
“After carefully looking at the situation, we realised that Ireen Navicha, who is 21 years old, is the contestant who has a greater chance of performing well at Miss World,” said Kambewa.
Kambewa also said Navicha’s initiatives aimed at supporting girls who have returned to school are in line with the key areas promoted by the Miss World competition.
He said the initiatives could give Navicha an added advantage as she represents Malawi at the international competition.
The Miss World competition, which allows contestants aged between 17 and 27, is scheduled to take place in Vietnam from August to September this year.
