NIGERIA: Spain Rewrite Football History With Unprecedented Men’s, Women’s World Cup Double

Spain have etched their name into football history by becoming the first country to simultaneously hold both the FIFA Men’s and FIFA Women’s World Cup titles.

The historic milestone was confirmed after Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, securing their second men’s world title and completing an unprecedented double in global football.

FIFA celebrated the achievement in a post on its official X account, describing Spain as “history-makers” for becoming the first nation to reign as both men’s and women’s world champions at the same time.

The feat comes three years after Spain’s women’s national team claimed its maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup title by defeating England 1-0 in the 2023 final in Sydney, Australia, courtesy of Olga Carmona’s match-winning goal.

Spain’s latest triumph also marks a return to the summit of men’s football 16 years after its first World Cup success in South Africa in 2010, where Andrés Iniesta’s extra-time strike sealed victory over the Netherlands.

The achievement underscores the remarkable transformation of Spanish football over the past two decades. Beyond winning both World Cup titles, Spain’s men’s team also lifted the UEFA Euro 2024 trophy, while the women’s side has established itself as one of the sport’s dominant forces following its breakthrough success on the global stage.

The country’s football structure has increasingly been credited for producing technically gifted players through a strong emphasis on youth development, academy football and a consistent playing philosophy across age-grade and senior national teams.

Spain’s success also reflects the growing influence of clubs such as Barcelona and Real Madrid, whose academies continue to produce players for both the men’s and women’s national teams.

By holding the two biggest prizes in international football simultaneously, Spain has achieved a landmark that had eluded traditional football powerhouses including Brazil, Germany, Italy, Argentina and France since the FIFA Women’s World Cup was introduced in 1991.

The historic double further cements Spain’s place among the most successful football nations of the modern era, with both its men’s and women’s teams now setting the benchmark for excellence on the international stage.
