MALAWI: African Development Bank Hails Shire Valley Transformation Project as Key to Food Security
By Smile Hamilton
The African Development Bank (ADB) has described the Shire Valley Transformation Project as a critical initiative in addressing food security and driving national development in Malawi.
ADB Executive Director for Malawi, Mauritius and Zambia, Nalishebo Shebo, made the remarks after touring the project site in Chikwawa on Sunday.
During the visit, Shebo expressed satisfaction with the progress being made on the project and pledged to lobby for additional funding to support its implementation and expansion.
Deputy Director in Malawi’s Ministry of Finance, Francis Kachule, said the visit was significant as it could help unlock more financial support from development partners.
Kachule noted that increased funding would contribute to the successful completion and sustainability of the project, which is expected to transform agricultural production in the Lower Shire region.
The Shire Valley Transformation Project is expected to commence operations in October this year following the completion of the temporary water intake system on the Shire River.
The project is regarded as one of Malawi’s flagship irrigation initiatives and is expected to boost agricultural productivity, strengthen food security and improve livelihoods for thousands of farming households.
