NIGERIA: Deji Adeyanju Urges Jonathan To Shun 2027 Presidential Race
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Prominent activist and public commentator Deji Adeyanju has written an open letter to former President Goodluck Jonathan advising him against joining the 2027 presidential race.
In the letter made public on Wednesday Adeyanju who described himself as a well-wisher and admirer of Jonathan’s leadership expressed concern over growing speculations about the former president’s possible return to active politics.
Adeyanju noted that Nigeria’s political climate remains fragile and warned that the Peoples Democratic Party platform which Jonathan is being linked with appears increasingly unstable and divided. He argued that subjecting himself to the roughness of another electoral contest at this stage may not serve the former president’s legacy well.
The activist added that even beyond the question of victory or defeat the process itself risks unnecessary controversy that could unintentionally diminish the statesmanlike stature Jonathan has earned over the years.
He appealed to Jonathan to continue serving in the higher role of an elder statesman on the continent whose influence is felt through guidance and wisdom rather than through another electoral contest.
The letter which was addressed to Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR ended on a note of respect urging the former president to prioritise his legacy and continental influence above partisan ambitions.
