By Moses Punyuah
Public transport operators have announced a nationwide strike beginning Monday in protest against the rising fuel prices, warning of major disruptions across the country.
The operators, including matatu owners, boda boda associations and tour vehicle operators, also announced an immediate 50 percent increase in transport fares citing the high cost of operations.
Speaking on Friday, Matatu Owners Association President Albert Karakacha said operators will withdraw services until the government addresses their grievances.
“On Monday, there will be strictly no movement of vehicles until the government listens to our cry,” Karakacha said.
The operators warned that the fare hike and planned demonstrations could paralyse transport services in several parts of th
e country.
