Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where she has declared her intention to contest the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu announced her decision in a statement posted on her X handle on Wednesday, saying the move was driven by her commitment to the political direction of former presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she wrote.
She explained that her initial decision to support Peter Obi led her to the ADC, and her move to the NDC is to continue honouring that commitment.
“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” Yesufu added.
The activist made it clear she is not joining the NDC as an ordinary member but as a senatorial candidate for the FCT.
“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she stated.
Yesufu expressed gratitude to the ADC for the opportunity to serve in various capacities, including as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at different levels. She said she had concluded her obligations with the party and ensured a clean transition.
The development is the latest in a series of high-profile defections from the ADC following the recent move by Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the NDC, triggering a wave of realignment in the opposition ahead
of the 2027 polls.
