NIGERIA: Supreme Court Dismisses Appeal Against Wike Faction’s In PDP Leadership Crisis
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Supreme Court of Nigeria on Thursday delivered a landmark judgment in favour of the Nyesom Wike-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing the appeal filed by the Sule Lamido, Tanimu Turaki group.
The apex court upheld the earlier decisions of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, which had nullified the controversial PDP national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025.
Delivering the ruling, the Supreme Court rejected the argument by the Turaki-led faction that the matter was purely an internal party affair and therefore not justiciable.
The court affirmed that the lower courts were right to intervene due to alleged breaches of the PDP constitution, the 1999 Constitution, and INEC guidelines.
The crisis stemmed from a suit filed by three aggrieved PDP members, Austin Nwachukwu (Imo State PDP Chairman), Hon. Amah Abraham Nnanna (Abia State PDP Chairman), and Turnah Alabh George (South-South PDP Secretary).
They challenged the validity of the Ibadan convention, arguing that the party failed to conduct proper state congresses before proceeding with the national convention.
In a judgment delivered on October 31, 2025, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja had declared the convention invalid. The Court of Appeal later upheld this decision and barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising any resolutions or officers elected at the Ibadan gathering.
With Thursday’s Supreme Court verdict, the Wike faction has consolidated its position within the ongoing PDP internal dispute.
The ruling effectively puts an end to the legal challenge mounted by the Turaki-led group and strengthens the standing of the faction backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The judgment is expected to have far-reaching implications for the PDP as the party continues to grapple with deep divisions ahead
of future elections.
