Supporters of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), have taken over Ramat Park in Benin City, Edo State, Southern Nigeria, celebrating even as the official results of the governorship election are yet to be fully announced.
As the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) began the collation of results on Sunday, the PDP secured a win in the first local government area, Igueben, polling 8,470 votes, while the APC followed with 5,907. The Labor Party trailed behind with 494 votes.
Ramat Park, located just 700 metres from the INEC office, became the focal point of celebrations as supporters from both APC and PDP gathered, chanting victory songs and engaging in jubilant displays.
The APC supporters set up electronic gadgets and danced to music in anticipation of favorable outcomes.
The highly competitive off-cycle election featured 17 candidates, with APC and PDP emerging as the two dominant parties vying for the governorship.
Despite the tension, the election was conducted under heavy security, as operatives of the police and military worked to maintain order between the opposing supporters.
Edo residents had voted on Saturday to elect a new governor to lead the state for the next four years. With the results trickling in, the atmosphere remains charged as both parties await the outcome of the election.
