MALAWI: Learners Shine at African Spelling Bee as Chisale Elected Continental President

Malawi was successfully represented at the African Spelling Bee in Harare, Zimbabwe, where six learners competed against 72 participants from across the continent and secured an impressive third-place finish.
The achievement underscores the growing strength of academic competitions in Malawi, with the learners demonstrating exceptional spelling and confidence on an international stage.
In further positive developments from Harare, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Malawi National Spelling Bee, Lewis Mbaula Chisale, has been elected President of the African Spelling Bee by the General Assembly, which comprises representatives from 27 African countries.
Chisale becomes the first-ever President of the African Spelling Bee and is expected to serve a four-year term, marking a historic milestone for both Malawi and the continental initiative.
Speaking following his election, Chisale described the development as a significant step forward in promoting literacy and educational excellence across Africa.
“I am honored by the trust placed in me by member countries, and I look forward to working with all stakeholders to promote literacy and educational excellence across the continent,” said Chisale.
He added that collaboration among participating countries will remain key to strengthening the competition and expanding opportunities for young learners.
