The Mzimba Heritage Association (MZIHA) has spoken against calls to divide Mzimba District, saying such proposals would create unnecessary divisions among people.
Chairperson of the association, Mzondi Moyo, told reporters in Mzuzu that the district should remain one, describing it as a united body that cannot be separated.
Moyo’s sentiments come amid calls from some quarters proposing the splitting of the district.
“Mzimba is like a body which cannot be divided, just as no one can cut off their leg or hand,” said Moyo.
He added that the association plans to write to State President Professor Peter Arthur Mutharika regarding the matter.
Moyo explained that Mzimba has a long historical background dating back to the colonial era, when traditional leaders were called to join what later became Malawi under the British protectorate.
According to Moyo, the historical unity of Mzimba should be preserved rather than weakened through administra
tive division.
