The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has urged Constituency Civic and Voter Education Assistants to carry out their duties with professionalism, stressing that the credibility and future of the upcoming by-elections largely depend on their conduct.
MEC Chairperson, Annabel Mtalimanja, made the remarks during the official opening of a training session for civic and voter education assistants held at Mponela in Dowa District.
Mtalimanja encouraged the participants to provide accurate, clear and appropriate information to communities in areas where the by-elections will take place this month. She said the role of civic educators is crucial in ensuring that voters understand the electoral process.
“You are the bridge between the Commission and the voters. The information you provide must be factual and unbiased to safeguard the integrity of the election,” Mtalimanja said.
In his remarks, one of the Constituency Civic and Voter Education Assistants, Essau Chilowa, pledged to execute his duties with dedication, discipline and professionalism. “We are committed to serving with integrity and ensuring that people are well informed ahead of the by-elections,” he said.
The Commission expressed confidence that the trained assistants will contribute towards the delivery of free, fair and credible by-elections that reflect the will of
the people.
