NIGERIA: African Union Commission Urges Restraint And Diplomacy Amid US-Iran Military Escalation
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep concern over reported military strikes carried out by the United States in coordination with Israeli forces against targets inside the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Chairperson described the action as a serious intensification of hostilities in the Middle East, marking a dangerous escalation in an already volatile region.
In a press statement issued by the AU Commission, the Chairperson called for immediate restraint, urgent de-escalation, and sustained dialogue among all parties involved.
He emphasised that all actions must fully comply with international law and the United Nations Charter to protect global peace and security.
The statement warned that continued escalation could worsen instability worldwide, with severe consequences for energy markets, food security, and economic resilience, particularly affecting Africa, where conflict and economic pressures already pose significant challenges.
The Chairperson urged all concerned actors to prioritise diplomatic engagement, including ongoing mediation efforts facilitated by the Sultanate of Oman, to prevent further deterioration and uphold the rules-based international order.
H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reiterated the African Union’s position that sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomacy rather than force.
The AU Commission continues to monitor developments closely and advocates for peaceful resoluti
on of the crisis.
