MALAWI: The Royal Dilemma Premieres, Signalling New Era For Local Cinema

The Malawian film industry celebrated a milestone with the premiere of The Royal Dilemma, a feature length drama hailed as a coming of age moment for local cinema. The film is set to premiere on 27 March 2026 in Lilongwe.
Produced by GOSM Films, the story intertwines Malawian traditions with themes designed to appeal to wider audiences, according to cast member Edwin Chonde.
Cast member and sponsor Idah Esther Chabuka believes the production could help put Malawi on the African cinema map.
Directed by Isaac Misoya and written and produced by Alinafe Trywell Mwambira who also stars in the film the cast features veteran actors Joyce Mhango Chavula, Innocent Manyera, and Ian Chisakula. Gospel musician Miracle Chinga makes her acting debut.
The production has received support from local sponsors promoting Malawi’s creative sector, including Area 12’s The Fort R
estaurant.
