Malawi football legend Esau Kanyenda has been laid to rest in Manchester, United Kingdom. Kanyenda died on 2 December 2025 after a battle with liver cancer, his family and football officials confirmed.
Kanyenda enjoyed a football career that spanned over two decades, with notable stints at Dwasco FC, Jomo Cosmos, Rostov, Lokomotiv Moscow and Mighty Wanderers.
He represented Malawi’s national football team, the Flames, on 72 occasions, scoring 22 goals. Kanyenda is fondly remembered for his impressive performances, including his appearance at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.
His contribution to Malawian football both on and off the field left an enduring legacy among fans, colleagues and young player
s alike.
