NIGERIA: Senate Directs NSA To Investigate Fake Reports On Akpabio’s Health
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Senate has directed the National Security Adviser to investigate the circulation of fake reports claiming that President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, suffered a health emergency and was rushed to a hospital in London.
The resolution was adopted on Tuesday during plenary after Senator Titus Zam (APC, Plateau) raised a point of order highlighting the spread of the false information across media platforms and social media.
Senator Zam described the misinformation as unacceptable and urged authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible to serve as a deterrent to others.
In his response, President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, said it had become increasingly difficult to regulate what is published about politicians, especially on social media. He described much of the content on some platforms as “garbage in, garbage out.”
The Senate’s decision comes amid growing concerns over the spread of fake news targeting high-ranking public officials and its potential to undermine public trust and national stability.
The National Security Adviser is expected to provide a report on the origin and dissemination of the false reports.
