NIGERIA: Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Confirmed Dead After Collapsing At Government House
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has been confirmed dead after collapsing at the Government House in Yenagoa on Thursday afternoon.
Sources at the seat of power said the incident occurred around midday. He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Medical personnel at the facility confirmed the death but declined further comments, citing protocol.
The media aide to the late deputy governor, Doubara Atasi, could not be reached for comments following earlier brief confirmation of the collapse.
Governor Douye Diri is yet to issue an official statement on the development.
The death comes barely two months after Governor Diri, alongside members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party and defected to the All Progressives Congress in October 2025. Senator Ewhrudjakpo was conspicuously absent during the public announcement and had not publicly declared his political allegiance since then.
Further details on the cause of death and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the state government in due course.
