ZIMBABWE: Sungura Legend Nicholas Zakaria Dies After Long Illness

Zimbabwean Sungura icon Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria has died after a prolonged illness, family members confirmed.

Zakaria, aged 68, was a pioneer of Sungura music and co-founder of the Khiama Boys, a group that helped launch the careers of stars such as Alick Macheso and System Tazvida. He earned the nickname Senior Lecturer for mentoring young musicians and shaping the genre for over four decades.

Apart from his powerful Shona vocals, Zakaria was celebrated for his exceptional guitar skills. He also once released a Chichewa album, and historical accounts show that his father came from Malawi.

In recent years, the veteran musician battled diabetes and hypertension, conditions that affected his mobility and performances. Tributes are pouring in from across Zimbabwe’s music industry, praising him as a humble teacher and cultural pillar.

Funeral details will be announced by the family.
