NIGERIA: Senate To Screen Defence Minister Nominee Gen. Christopher Musa On Wednesday
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Nigerian Senate will on Wednesday screen and confirm General Christopher Gwabin Musa as the new Minister of Defence, following a formal request from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Senate Majority Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, disclosed this in a statement issued Tuesday, confirming that the President’s nomination letter has been received by the upper chamber.
According to the statement, the letter will be read on the floor during plenary on Wednesday, after which the screening of General Musa will commence immediately.
Senator Bamidele emphasized that the Senate will not delay the process, describing the nomination as touching “the core interest of our nation” at a time of heightened national security challenges.
General Musa, a former Chief of Defence Staff, was nominated on Tuesday to replace Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned on health grounds.
The screening is expected to be swift, with confirmation likely on the same day.
