Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has tendered his resignation with immediate effect, citing health reasons.
In a resignation letter dated December 1, 2025 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the minister formally stepped down from the cabinet.
President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude to Badaru for his service to the nation.
A senior presidency source confirmed that the President is expected to transmit the name of Badaru’s successor to the Senate for confirmation later this week.
Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State for two terms from 2015 to 2023 before he was appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.
His resignation comes just days after President Tinubu declared a national security emergency, promising to soon unveil comprehensive measures to address the country’s lingering insecurity challenges.
