The Owa of Igbajo, Oba Adegboyega Famodun III, has died at the age of 67 after a brief illness.
His passing was confirmed on Sunday in an official statement issued by the Gbeleru Royal Family and signed by Prince David Famodun.
Oba Famodun, who ruled the ancient community in Boluwaduro Local Government Area of Osun State, was a former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State.
He was installed as the 30th Owa of Igbajo on November 24, 2022, during the administration of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.
However, his reign was marred by a prolonged leadership dispute. He was removed from the throne through an executive order issued by Governor Ademola Adeleke, who installed Oba Ademola Makinde as the new monarch.
In January 2025, the Osun State High Court reinstated Oba Famodun, but the ruling remains under challenge at the appellate court.
Confirming his death, Prince David Famodun said: “On behalf of the Gbeleru Royal Family of Igbajo, I write with a deep sense of loss and gratitude to Almighty God to notify you of the passing of our revered traditional ruler and the 30th Owa of Igbajoland, Oba Philip Adegbogbega Famodun III. He passed away on Friday, November 28, 2025, after a brief illness.”
He added that the monarch dedicated himself to unity and development throughout his reign.
The statement further stated: “During his reign, Oba Famodun worked tirelessly to unite the people of Igbajoland, promoting peace, understanding, and progress. His leadership and vision have left an indelible mark on the community.”
Details on funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the royal family in the coming days.
