NIGERIA: Makinde Support Groups Flood PDP Convention Venue With 2027 Campaign Posters
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
Delegates arriving in Ibadan for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention were met on Friday with a surge of campaign materials urging Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to join the 2027 presidential race.
The posters, mounted by various support groups, were positioned at major entry points of the Adamasingba Stadium, creating a vibrant backdrop as party members gathered for the two-day event.
While Governor Makinde has not formally expressed interest in the race, his supporters appear to be intensifying calls for him to run. One coalition, Lana Fun Seyi, boldly displayed: “Seyi Makinde for President.” Another banner hinted at reform, reading: “Seyi Makinde Will Fix Nigeria 2027.”
Some delegates described the posters as a sign of Makinde’s growing national profile, saying the enthusiasm reflects confidence in his leadership style and administrative track record.
The governor, however, has consistently maintained that decisions about his political future will be revealed “at the appropriate time,” dismissing ongoing speculation as unnecessary pressure.
Beyond Makinde-themed messages, the stadium also displayed posters for other aspirants seeking national positions within the PDP. Campaign materials for former Minister Kabiru Turaki and former Deputy National Chairman Taofeek Arapaja were also visible around the venue.
The colourful display contributed to the build-up of excitement as delegates continued to arrive in Ibadan. Organisers say the turnout and energy indicate a potentially decisive convention.
The gathering is expected to produce a new National Working Committee that will steer the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
