KENYA: President Ruto Says Kenya Needs New Airport, JKIA Upgrade To Cost Sh200bn
By Moses Punyuah, Nairobi Kenya
Kenyan President William Ruto, has declared that Kenya must build a new international airport, dismissing critics as he pushes for a Sh200 billion upgrade of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
“Enough with the nonsense! We need a new airport,” Ruto said during a town hall in Mombasa, describing parts of JKIA as “canvas” and unfit for a modern economy.
The plan follows the cancellation of a controversial Adani Group deal last year. Ruto said the project will be funded through public-private partnerships, with talks underway with Qatar and other investors. He urged Kenyans to support the initiative, saying, “We don’t have a spare country. Let’s build it together.”
