University staff unions have officially called off their 49-day nationwide strike after reaching a deal with the government on the phased payment of Sh7.8 billion in salary arrears. This agreement follows successful negotiations between Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos and university staff union leaders.
The agreement, signed this afternoon at the Ministry of Education’s Jogoo House B offices, will see the first tranche paid in November 2025 and the second in July 2026.
The signing of the Return-to-Work Formula was witnessed by the Principal Secretary for Higher Education, Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, and her Basic Education counterpart, Prof. Julius Bitok.
UASU Secretary-General Constantine Wesonga said the unions agreed to resume duties immediately, marking the end of weeks of academic paralysis across public universities.
CS Migos lauded the breakthrough, saying the government remains committed to sustained dialogue and stability in the higher education sector.
