At least 42 people from Malawi and Zimbabwe have died after a bus carrying them home overturned on a mountainous section of the N1 highway in South Africa’s Limpopo province.
The tragic accident occurred on Sunday night as the bus was navigating a steep and winding stretch of the road, reportedly losing control before overturning.
Among the victims are seven children, according to local authorities who have since launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the accident as a devastating loss not only for South Africa but also for its “sister states of Malawi and Zimbabwe.”
Rescue teams worked through the night to recover bodies and assist survivors, with several passengers reported to have sustained serious injuries and been taken to nearby hospitals.
Officials from the Malawi and Zimbabwe embassies in South Africa are said to be coordinating with local authorities to identify the victims and provide support to the affected families.
