By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Police in Chikwawa have arrested three men in connection with the illegal possession of raw ivory.
The suspects have been identified as Tobias Kandiado, 27; Steven Kamfosi, 35, from Kanyoza Village under Traditional Authority Ndakwera in Chikwawa District; and Brandon Njunga, 46, from Traditional Authority Nthache in Mwanza.
Sergeant Chancy Mfune Zare, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Chikwawa Police Station, confirmed the development.
“We arrested the three on 20th September 2025, after well-wishers tipped us that the suspects were offering raw ivory for sale without consent from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife,” said Zare.
She explained that the conduct is contrary to Section 110(b) of the National Parks and Wildlife Act.
Zare added that the suspects will appear in court once the paperwork is completed, where they are expected to answer charges of illegal possession of specimens of listed species.
