MALAWI: Over 7.2 Million Citizens To Cast Ballots In Tuesday’s General Election

With just one day to go, more than 7.2 million Malawians are set to cast their votes in the highly anticipated general election scheduled for Tuesday, September 16.
Almost 17 presidential hopefuls are competing for the top seat to lead the nation’s population of over 22 million people. According to electoral laws, the winning candidate must secure 50 per cent plus one of the total valid votes to be declared president.

The presidency is now determined through a two-round system. If no candidate achieves an absolute majority in the first round, a runoff election will be conducted within 60 days.
In addition to the presidency, Malawians will be voting for 229 Members of Parliament and 509 Ward Councillors across the country.
The polling process is expected to begin at 6:00 AM and close at 4:00 PM, with official results projected to be announced withinP seven days.
