By Lisbeth Micheni, Kenya
A dramatic confrontation in Embakasi, Nairobi, saw a police officer injured after being assaulted by a matatu driver linked to Embassava Sacco.
The driver, identified as Jared Nyanduro Onyancha, was intercepted on Monday while operating a 14-seater vehicle without a valid service licence.
Police officer Jackline Naeku, who was manning traffic near TAJ Mall, flagged down the vehicle and ordered him to proceed to Embakasi Police Station.
On the way, the suspect reportedly threatened to take their lives, crashed into a parked car, and later veered toward an electricity pole before the vehicle overturned after hitting flower vases.
“She managed to come out of the vehicle and the driver followed her and started beating her with kicks and blows,” a police report from Embakasi Police Station states.
Naeku was rescued by members of the public, and the driver was taken into custody.
However, once at the station, Nyanduro is said to have turned violent again, attacking another officer, Samuel Njuguna, in the search room and biting his left hand, leaving him with injuries.
Both officers received treatment in different hospitals and were later discharged.
The suspect is being held at Embakasi Police Station awaiting his arraignment.
