Manchester City have announced the signing of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth around 35 million euros (\$41 million).
The 26-year-old Italy international signed a five-year contract with the Premier League champions.
His arrival follows the departure of long-serving Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson, who joined Turkish side Fenerbahce after eight years at the Etihad.
Donnarumma, who helped Italy win Euro 2020, was also part of the PSG team that lifted the UEFA Champions League last season.
However, his exclusion from the French champions’ Super Cup squad signalled that he had lost his first-choice status.
Speaking after completing the move, Donnarumma described the transfer as a “special and proud moment.”
“To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me. I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player in world football would love to join,” he said.
City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, hailed the signing as a major boost for the squad.
He said, “Gianluigi’s pedigree, quality, and record speak for itself, and we are all absolutely thrilled he has joined us here at City. He has accumulated a wealth of top-level experience and knows what is required to achieve success on a sustained level.”
Donnarumma will compete for the number one spot as City continue their push for domestic and European success under Guardiola.
