NIGERIA: Abuja–Kaduna Train Derails, Passengers Evacuated Amid Panic

A Abuja-Kaduna passenger train has derailed on Tuesday morning, spurring panic among commuters after several coaches overturned.
The incident occurred around 11:09 a.m., shortly after the train departed Abuja, between Kubwa and Asham stations. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic,as passengers scrambled to safety, fearing for their lives.

Confirming the development, Managing Director, Nigeria Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, said rescue efforts were immediately activated.
He said: “NRC confirms a train derailment involving its Kaduna-bound AKTS service at about 11:09 at KM 49 between Kubwa station and Asham station. Full complement of security is already on ground, and efforts are ongoing to move all passengers back to Abuja safely. Kindly bear with us at this moment.”
Emergency rescue teams and medical personnel were deployed, with military support assisting the evacuation. Hospitals in the vicinity have also been placed on alert.
The cause of the derailment is yet to be determined, as investigations continue.
