NIGERIA: “False Husband-Snatching Rumour Almost Drove Me Into Depression” – Veekee James Opens Up
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
Celebrity fashion designer Veekee James has opened up about how false rumours surrounding her marriage nearly pushed her into depression.
Speaking during an interview with actress and TV host Nancy Isime, Veekee revealed that an online scandal alleging she “snatched” her husband, Femi Atere, from a friend, took a severe toll on her mental health.
She said: “There was one that really shook me, and that was the period when we had to ask God to help us come out of it,” she said. “It was a story about how I stole him from a friend, and we were sleeping with each other, which was all lies. And it almost put me into depression. That was the first time I got to know what people who say they feel depressed felt.”
Veekee recalled locking herself in her room for two days, crying and praying as she struggled with the false allegations. She described the experience as her first real encounter with depression, a condition she previously did not fully understand.
According to her, faith and resilience helped her overcome the difficult period.
“I remember entering my room and not coming out for two days. I was crying and praying. The way God brought me out felt like a miracle, and I kept hearing more stories, which I laugh [about now],” she added.
The fashion designer, known for her personality and creative designs, has continued to maintain that the rumours were baseless and fabricated.
Veekee James’ revelation highlights the emotional impact of online bullying and false narratives, a struggle faced by many public figures in the age of social media.
