MALAWI: Mulhakho Wa Alhomwe Supports UNESCO Declaration Of Mount Mulanje
By Smile Hamilton Malawi
Mulhakho wa Alhomwe has expressed its support for the declaration of Mount Mulanje as a protected heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
According to the chairperson of the cultural and heritage group, Muchanakhwaye Mpuluka, the declaration brings more benefits to communities living around the mountain and to the nation at large.

“Mulanje Mountain holds significant cultural and spiritual importance for the Lhomwe people,” said Mpuluka, adding that the UNESCO recognition brings international attention and support for conservation efforts.
On July 11 this year, Mount Mulanje was officially declared a World Heritage Site. However, the development sparked concerns among some traditional leaders who are pushing for bauxite exploration and extraction.

Meanwhile, senior chiefs and environmentalists have strongly dismissed any attempts to undermine the declaration.
