2027: Four Years Enough To Put Nigeria On Right Path, Peter Obi Reaffirms

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reiterated his commitment to serving only one four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election, saying the period would be sufficient to reposition Nigeria.

Obi made the declaration during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, dismissing claims that his promise to serve a single term was merely a political strategy to secure votes.

The former Anambra State governor was reacting to remarks by his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who had said both leaders agreed Obi would serve only four years if elected.

According to Obi, the agreement was founded on mutual trust and a shared commitment to honouring their pledge to Nigerians.

“I have said this thing several times. We have what we can call a meeting agreement. We are gentlemen; we must respect it,” he said.

Obi maintained that he did not require more than four years to demonstrate effective leadership and lay a solid foundation for the country’s development.

“I don’t need more than four years to show Nigerians the right path they will follow. It’s a simple thing. Even if you want me to sign it with you, I sign it with you.

“A day more than four years is not Peter Obi. I want us to start trusting our leaders,” he added.

The former governor said his record in Anambra State reflected his commitment to keeping campaign promises, noting that he implemented the policies he promised after assuming office.

“When I was going to become a governor, I said the things that I would do, and when I came in, I started doing it.

“I showed everybody. Go and listen to my campaign. I said I would manage their money efficiently. Schools will work; health works. Everything I said, I did. That is the way to work,” Obi said.

His comments come amid growing political realignments and consultations ahead of the 2027 general election, with political parties and aspirants intensifying preparations for the presidential contest.
