ZAMBIA: Lungu Family Appeals In South Africa As Zambian Court Seizes Assets Linked To Former President’s Son
By Smile Hamilton
The legal and political aftermath surrounding the late former President Edgar Lungu continues to unfold, with fresh developments emerging both in South Africa and Zambia.
The family of the late President Lungu has filed an appeal before the South African Supreme Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn a recent High Court ruling. The appeal marks the latest twist in an ongoing legal process that has drawn significant public attention. President Lungu, who passed away on 5th June 2025, has not yet been laid to rest as legal proceedings continue.
Meanwhile, in Zambia, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court has ordered the detention of 79 vehicles and 23 properties belonging to Dalitso Lungu, the son of former President Edgar Lungu.
The seized assets reportedly include parcels of land, a shopping mall, petrol stations, and several luxury apartments, among other properties.
According to court documents, the ruling was made under Zambia’s Non-Conviction Forfeiture Law. The law permits the state to take possession of assets suspected to be proceeds of crime without securing a criminal conviction, provided the court is satisfied on a balance of probabilities that the properties are linked to illicit activities.
The developments have sparked widespread debate across the country, with legal experts and political commentators closely monitoring both the appeal in South Africa and the asset forfeiture case in Zambia.
As the cases progress, the nation awaits further clarity on the legal battles surrounding the late president’s family and the broader implications for governance and a
ccountability.
