The United States of America (USA) Mission to Malawi has celebrated its 249 years of American independence with a grand diplomatic reception in Lilongwe.
The event, which took place at the U.S. Embassy Chief of Mission’s Residence in Area 10 has brought together a distinguished mix of high-profile guests. Among those in attendance are Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda, cabinet ministers, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, prominent politicians, and leaders from the business community.
U.S. Ambassador to Malawi, Amy Diaz, is hosting the celebration, which marks nearly two and a half centuries since the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. The reception is being held under tight security and features American cultural performances, traditional cuisine, and ceremonial speeches highlighting the longstanding relationship between Malawi and the United States.
In her welcoming remarks, Ambassador Diaz emphasized the strong partnership between the two countries, focusing on shared values such as democracy, development, and human rights. “The United States remains committed to working with the people of Malawi in fostering peace, prosperity, and opportunity,” she said.
Guests at the event expressed admiration for the enduring diplomatic ties and praised the support the U.S. government continues to provide in areas such as health, education, and governance.
This year’s celebration also comes at a time when both nations are exploring new avenues of cooperation, especially in trade, climate action, and youth empowerment.
