In a response deemed an act of “self-defence,” Israeli airstrikes targeted military installations in Iran, following a ballistic missile attack from Tehran earlier this month, according to the United States.
The White House National Security Council’s spokesperson, Sean Savett, confirmed late Friday that the strikes were aimed specifically at military sites, adding that the action was prompted by Iran’s attack on October 1.
Savett emphasised the legitimacy of Israel’s response, stating, “These targeted strikes are an exercise in self-defence,” as Israel reacted to an escalating threat.
The United States, informed of Israel’s intentions prior to the strikes, confirmed that it had no direct involvement in the operation, according to a U.S. defence official who spoke with AFP on the condition of anonymity.
However, the official did not disclose the extent or timing of the information shared between the two allies.
Both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed on the development and continue to receive updates from national security advisors, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny of rising tensions in the region.
