UK Court Continues Hearing High-Profile Corruption Case Against Zuneth Sattar

By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Westminster Magistrates Court in London, United Kingdom, on Friday continued to hear a high-profile corruption case involving Malawian-born businessman Zuneth Sattar, who is accused of offering bribes to secure government contracts in Malawi.
Sattar is facing 18 charges related to bribery and corruption, stemming from allegations that he paid senior Malawian government officials in exchange for favorable treatment in public procurement processes. The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), which has been investigating the case, arrested Sattar in 2021. Since then, he has remained under strict bail conditions and is not permitted to leave the United Kingdom.
The case has drawn international attention due to its cross-border implications and the involvement of high-ranking officials. According to court documents expected to be submitted as evidence, several senior Malawian government figures are named. While these individuals were cleared of wrongdoing by authorities in Malawi, the UK prosecution may use the documents to establish a pattern of systemic corruption.
Legal analysts say the outcome of the case could set a precedent for how international anti-corruption efforts are handled, particularly in cases involving dual jurisdictions. The hearings are currently in the preliminary stages, and the court is expected to decide in the coming months whether the case will proceed to full trial.
The Sattar case continues to spark debate both in Malawi and abroad, with calls for greater transparency and accountability in public procurement and international cooperation in tackling corruption.
