Trash To Treasure: Mzuzu’s Innovative Waste Management Initiative

A waste management initiative is being implemented in Mzuzu, Malawi, to educate students on the importance of proper waste disposal and recycling.

Pamela Mlowoka, the district’s environmental educator, emphasized the significance of this program during a training session for students from ten schools in the district.

The students learned how to transform waste into useful products, such as making bags from plastic bottles, creating art from discarded materials, and composting food waste.

Ruth Chimwala, a student from Luwinga Secondary School, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, stating that it has inspired her to encourage her parents to implement recycling practices at home.

Nathaniel Shaba, a regional education officer, highlighted the success of the program, which has already been implemented in ten schools in the northern region.

This initiative aims to promote sustainable waste management practices among young people, fostering a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
