President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission following the Senate’s confirmation of its members on Tuesday.
A statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, announced that Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni, PhD, has been appointed Chairman of the Commission. Dr Oseni, who joined NERC as a Commissioner in January 2017 and later served as Vice Chairman, assumed the chairmanship on December 1, 2025. His tenure as Chairman will continue until the completion of his ten-year term in accordance with the Electricity Act, 2023.
Yusuf Ali, PhD, has been named Vice Chairman, effective December 1, 2025. Dr Ali was first appointed as a Commissioner in February 2022, and his designation as Vice Chairman will last until the end of his first term.
The reconstituted Board also includes Nathan Rogers Shatti, who is serving a second term as Commissioner after his initial appointment in January 2017; Dafe Akpeneye, also serving a second term since January 2017; Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello, serving her second term following her first appointment in December 2020; Dr Chidi Ike, serving his first term since February 2022; and Dr Fouad Animashaun, who is serving his first term effective December 2025.
Dr Animashaun brings extensive experience in the Nigerian power sector, having most recently served as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
President Tinubu has charged the new board members to deepen and consolidate the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s power sector, ensuring strict adherence to the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2023.
The reconstitution is expected to strengthen regulatory oversight and support efforts to improve electricity supply, investment, and overall sector performance across the country.
