Nigerian singer and producer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has shared how her collaboration with Nigerian music star Ayo Balogun, known as Wizkid, propelled her to the global music scene.
In an interview with Big Boy TV, Tems, 29, revealed that her feature on Wizkid’s hit song “Essence” attracted attention from top international stars, including Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Drake.
She noted that within just three days of the song’s release, the three icons reached out to her.
“After we did ‘Essence,’ I started getting messages. In 2020, Beyoncé’s team reached out, and I was like, ‘God, what’s going on?'” Tems recounted. She added that shortly afterward, she received direct messages from Rihanna and Drake.
“These are people I’ve looked up to, who have shaped culture for over a decade. To get their messages within days felt unreal, like I was dreaming or being pranked,” she said.
Tems’ rise in the music industry has been celebrated both in Nigeria and abroad, with “Essence” becoming one of the most notable songs in Afrobeats history.
