In a heartfelt address at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Her Excellency Josephine Lagu Yanga, Vice President of Service cluster, emphasized the importance of peace, climate resilience, and global solidarity.
Speaking under the theme “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights,” Vice President Lagu reiterated South Sudan’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“South Sudan will not be defined by the shadows of its past, but by the promise of its future,” she stated, highlighting the nation’s transition from conflict to fragile peace since the 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict.
She addressed ongoing security challenges, stressing the importance of the rule of law and the need for political stability. Despite being one of the least contributors to global emissions, South Sudan is significantly affected by climate change, facing floods and droughts. Vice President Lagu urged developed nations to fulfill climate finance commitments and support vulnerable countries.
South Sudan is embarking on ambitious initiatives, such as planting 100 million trees by 2030 and enhancing renewable energy infrastructure.
Vice President Lagu also called for international support for debt relief, increased contributions to the International Development Association, and the removal of sanctions hindering national stabilization.
In closing, she reminded the world of the UN’s founding ideals: unity and collective action.
“The world is better when we work together,” she concluded, affirming South Sudan’s commitment to global peace and climate resilience.
