South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holding general elections in December 2026, assuring that preparations remain on course.
The President made the remarks on Thursday during a meeting in Juba with the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (South Sudan), Prof. Abednego Akok Kacoul.
During the meeting, Prof. Akok briefed the President on the Commission’s ongoing preparations for the polls. He said nationwide voter registration and civic education programmes are expected to begin simultaneously across all 102 constituencies in the country’s ten states and three administrative areas.
The discussion also covered key operational matters, including constituency demarcation and logistical arrangements necessary for the electoral process.
President Kiir emphasized the need to maintain momentum in the preparations, adding that the government will provide the resources and logistical support required to ensure a smooth and credible election.
Prof. Akok welcomed the President’s continued engagement, noting that it provides encouragement to the Commission as it works to deliver orderly and credible elections for the people of
