South Sudanese Catholic Pilgrims Arrive Safely in Kampala for Martyrs’ Day Celebration

By Deborah Akur Chol, South Sudan
Catholic pilgrims from South Sudan have safely arrived in Kampala to commemorate Uganda’s Martyrs’ Day.
The group, who undertook an overland journey spanning several days, participated in a special Mass today at the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, one of Africa’s most revered Christian sites.
Uganda Martyrs’ Day honors 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican converts who were martyred between 1885 and 1887 for their faith under the orders of King Mwanga II. This annual celebration draws tens of thousands of pilgrims from various regions, including South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Church officials accompanying the South Sudanese delegation expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the pilgrims’ safe arrival and their involvement in this year’s spiritual journey, which embodies unity, faith, and resilience among believers.
