The University of Juba has celebrated its 27th convocation, recognising Ater John Kouch Thiep as the overall best student among more than 2,800 graduates. Thiep was awarded 10 million South Sudanese Pounds by Afriland First Bank in acknowledgement of his remarkable achievement.
Thiep, who pursued his studies in the School of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies within the Department of Geology and Mining, credited his success to his faith, the unwavering support of his family, and his determination.
“I am deeply grateful to God for this opportunity and the grace I have received because I could not have achieved this on my own,” he expressed during an interview.
He also commended the university for fostering an academic environment that greatly influenced his educational journey. “I appreciate the university for providing me with the chance to study here; it enabled me to comprehend the teachings of my lecturers,” Thiep stated. He recognised his parents for their financial support, which included school fees and transportation costs.
Thiep offered encouragement to current students, urging them to remain focused despite the challenges faced in the country. “The journey has been somewhat difficult, but in the context of South Sudan, one must cultivate resilience. So, don’t give up,” he advised.
His uncle, Kuoch Nyuol Biar, expressed immense pride in Thiep’s accomplishments, noting, “This was our expectation as we have supported and prepared him since primary school.” Biar also advocated for Thiep to be considered for a teaching assistant position at the university, highlighting his consistent excellence during his studies, including in Uganda.
After completing his Advanced Level studies in Uganda, Thiep enrolled at the University of Juba, where he excelled academically to become this year’s top graduate.
