SOUTH SUDAN: Trade Minister Suspends Key Officials Amid Corruption And Indiscipline Allegations

By Deborah Akur Chol, South Sudan
In a significant move, South Sudan’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Atong Kuol Manyang, has suspended two high-ranking officials: Undersecretary John Achier Manyuat and Executive Director of the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards, Gloria Nyoka Joseph due to allegations of corruption and misconduct.
The minister issued a ministerial order on Friday, detailing the suspension of the Undersecretary Achier for insubordination, indiscipline, and intimidation.
The order, which has been made public, states that Achier will be suspended without pay until further notice, with Leo Okwahi Lule appointed to act in his place.
“I, Atong Kuol Manyang, Minister of Trade and Industry in the Revitalized Transitional Government, do hereby issue this Ministerial Order No. 11/2025 for the immediate suspension of the Hon. Undersecretary for his insubordination, indiscipline, and intimidation,” the order reads.
In a separate directive, Minister Kuol also suspended Gloria Nyoka Joseph, citing allegations of misappropriating resources, engaging in unprocedural practices, and fostering divisive politics that undermine the ministerial authority.
Nyoka’s suspension will remain in effect, pending an investigation into the claims.
In her absence, Aldo Upiou Juady, a senior Director General, has been appointed as acting Executive Director.
Responding to her suspension, Nyoka confirmed receipt of the order, stating, “Yes, I have received it. This is an administrative issue, and I will await further developments. I believe it is a normal procedure, and I have nothing more to add at this time.”
Attempts to obtain comments from Undersecretary Achier following his suspension were unsuccessful.
The actions taken by Minister Kuol reflect an ongoing effort to address issues of accountability and governance within the South Sudanese trade sector.
Further updates on the situation are expected as investigations continue.
