South Sudan has joined the global community to celebrate World Metrology Day.
The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) took this opportunity to urge businesses to prioritize the use of accurate measuring instruments.
Observed annually on May 20th, World Metrology Day emphasizes the essential role of measurement science in our everyday lives.
This day underscores the significance of metrology in enhancing quality of life and protecting the environment, aligning with UNESCO’s objective of promoting science for the betterment of society.
Gloria Nyoka Joseph, Executive Director of the SSNBS, highlighted the imperative of ensuring precise measurements across various sectors.
“This day serves as a reminder of the pivotal role measurements play in guaranteeing quality, supporting public health, safeguarding the environment, and fostering technological progress,” she remarked. “In both stable and challenging times, the reliability of our measurement systems is essential for informed decision-making and sustainable development.”
Nyoka pointed out that in the context of South Sudan, the enhancement of the national metrology framework transcends mere technicality; it is foundational for socio-economic advancement.
“Accurate measurements are vital for ensuring product quality, fostering consumer trust, promoting fair trade, and adhering to international standards,” she emphasized.
Angelo Lado, General Manager of the National Chamber of Commerce, echoed the sentiment, stating the critical necessity of measurement within the private sector.
“Measurement is fundamental to our daily lives,” he noted. “In business, understanding the metrics of your products is crucial.”
Additionally, John Odongi Nyakapa, Director General of Legal Metrology, remarked that accurate measurements are essential for innovation, quality assurance, and economic development.
“For too long, South Sudan has faced significant challenges across various sectors, impeding progress and growth. However, we are now beginning to shift towards a more technology-driven future, with metrology playing a vital role in this transition,” Odongi asserted. “Accurate measurements are at the heart of infrastructure development, production of essential goods, and even healthcare provision.”
World Metrology Day commemorates the signing of the Metre Convention on May 20, 1875, an international treaty aimed at establishing a unified metric system for measuring weight and length to ensure fair trade practices.
The observance of this day aims to educate the public about the science of measurement and underline the importance of measurement standards in our everyday lives.
