SOUTH SUDAN: SPLM-IO Distances Self From Former Deputy Chairperson Nathaniel Oyet

By Deborah Akur Chol, South Sudan
In a press conference on Wednesday, Hon. Stephen Phar Kuol announced that the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) has officially distanced itself from former Deputy Chairperson Nathaniel Oyet. Moving forward, the party will only recognize Oyet as the former deputy chairperson.
“Hon. Nathaniel Oyet will be acknowledged solely as the former deputy chairperson by SPLM-IO. We cannot associate with leaders who are in self-imposed exile,” stated Hon. Stephen Phar.
This announcement comes on the heels of Stephen Phar Kuol’s election as the new interim chairperson of SPLM-IO, with Honorable Agok Makur stepping in as deputy chairperson and Hon. Lasaka was appointed as the party’s speaker.
In a related development, Hon. Nathaniel Oyet had previously issued a dismissal letter targeting Hon. Stephen Phar Kuol and other SPLM-IO members. However, the party’s members refuted Oyet’s letter, declaring it unofficial since he is currently outside the country. They emphasized that it is against the party’s policies for Oyet to issue such correspondence while in the diaspora.
