South Sudan Revenue Authority Launches Door-To-Door Taxpayer Registration To Enhance Revenue Collection
By Deborah Akur Chol, South Sudan
The South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) has initiated a door-to-door taxpayer registration campaign in Juba City aimed at maximizing revenue collection efforts. This initiative seeks to reach out to businesses, service providers, and self-employed individuals throughout the capital.
To streamline the registration process, Juba City has been divided into ten distinct zones. This strategic approach is intended to facilitate easier management of taxpayer compliance while establishing a comprehensive and current list of taxpayers.
Zone 1 comprises areas such as Juba Town, Hai Cinema, Hai Malaka, Malaki, Hai Commercial, Kator, Konyokonyo, Gabat, Hai Amarat, and Nimira Talata. Zone 2 includes Giada, Suk Sita, Atlabara, Khor, and Williang, while Zone 3 covers the Jebel Area, Rock City, Nyakuron, Mauna, and Check Point.
For Zone 4, the SSRA will be concentrating on taxpayer registration in the outskirts of Gumbo-Shirkat. Zones 6 and 7 will encompass Thongping and Gudele, respectively, while Zone 8 includes Mia Saba, Hai Referendum, Eden, and Newsite.
Furthermore, Zone 9 focuses on the UN, diplomatic missions, and embassies, while Zone 10 is designated for Gurei, Jebel Dinka, and Luri.
Simon Akuei Deng, the Commissioner General of the SSRA, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “We are dedicated to forming a thorough and updated taxpayer database,” he stated. “This effort goes beyond just increasing revenue; it’s about gathering accurate data to inform better decision-making and enhance our service to the public.” The objective is clear: broaden the tax base, refine the data, and lay the groundwork for improved tax management in the future.
However, the SSRA is also on guard against potential fraud. “We will not tolerate anyone collecting unauthorized fees or impersonating our officials,” warned Simon Akuei. He made it clear that offenders would face strict legal consequences, with any incidents reported to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
This door-to-door campaign signifies a significant advancement in tax administration within South Sudan. By registering every eligible taxpayer and ensuring compliance, the SSRA plans to enhance revenue collection, a move that could contribute to the country’s long-term development.
As of now, the duration of this registration exercise remains uncertain, as the revenue collection authorities have not provided a specific timeline.
