The South Sudan National Examination Council (NEC), under the Ministry of General Education, has announced the results for the 2024 Certificate of Primary Examination (CPE), nearly five months after the exams were conducted from November 18-22, 2024.
This significant delay in results has prevented many candidates from enrolling in secondary schools, with the NEC attributing the holdup to insufficient funding.
During the announcement in Juba, Honorable Kuyok Abol Kuyok, the national minister of general education and instruction, reported that the examinations were administered across 1,665 schools clustered into 551 examination centers nationwide.
“Of the registered 79,010 candidates 43,266 males and 35,740 females 77,264 candidates sat for the exams, leading to an absentee count of 1,746,” Kuyok stated.
He went on to reveal that a total of 73,326 candidates passed the examinations, representing an impressive overall pass rate of 94.9%. This included 40,427 males and 32,899 females among the successful candidates.
Kuyok emphasized that the examinations were conducted in 1,814 schools across 522 centers. He noted, “Among those who attempted the exams, 73,326 candidates 40,427 males and 32,899 females achieved passing scores. The overall performance index stands at a weight score of 73.1%.”
However, 3,878 candidates failed to meet the passing score, registering below 249.
In terms of subject performance, Science and Christian Religious Education emerged as the top-performing subjects with scores averaging 79.9%. Conversely, Mathematics and Islamic Religious Education were highlighted as the subjects with the lowest performance, with average scores of 61% and 51%, respectively.
JCC Model Primary School was recognized as the best-performing school, followed closely by Venus Star Academy, both located in Central Equatoria State.
Among the students, Felix Luwala Wani Jube and Moses Jerry Acire Ocaya, both from JCC Model Primary School, were noted as the top performers with scores of 453 marks each. Gift Chandia Remis Aluwe stood out as the highest-scoring female student, achieving 451 marks, followed by Sabrine Keji Paulino Francis, also from JCC Model Primary School, with the same score.
Kuyok encouraged parents to collect official results from the respective schools where their children sat for the exams. “I hereby officially release the 2024 CPE results. We urge the public to acquire official results from the schools or use the result-checking application. Simply dial 1138 followed by your index number to receive your results instantly,” he advised.
He further stressed that despite a total of 69,555 candidates 38,591 males and 30,964 females registered, only 68,281 candidates sat for the exams.
In conclusion, the NEC has specifically pointed out Mathematics and Islamic Religious Education as subjects requiring immediate attention. Hon. Kuyok mentioned that the Ministry of Education plans to recruit and train teachers in these subjects to enhance curriculum delivery and improve student outcomes.
